Cybersecurity for Higher Education
Given the large number of students and teachers that need to access a wide variety of applications, cybersecurity is especially challenging for educational institutions. Students and teachers have poor awareness of phishing scams and cyber safety which can make them easy targets. Students often come to campus with their own laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones providing a vast series of devices for criminals to attack. It’s often possible for strangers to roam through a campus environment and enter a research lab to plant a USB. And educational institutions put off cyber security investments in favor of other, more pressing, web development and technology projects.
But educational institutions have a responsibility to do all they can to protect the information they manage from falling into the wrong hands. Beyond the ethics of protecting student data, there are recommended standards like NIST and laws like GLBA that require cybersecurity solutions for education to implement stronger cybersecurity safeguards.
Higher education institutions are prime targets for cyber attacks due to ranking lowest in cyber security preparedness. Cyber criminals know this and can earn as much as $265 for stolen academic records on the dark web.
